What happens when your high school nemesis becomes the shining star in a universe you pretty much saved? Book blogger Kimberly Long is about to find out.
A chick lit enthusiast since the first time she read “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” Kim, with her blog, “Pastel is the New Black,” has worked tirelessly by night to keep the genre alive, and help squash the claim that “chick lit is dead” once and for all. Not bad for a woman who by day ekes out a meager living as a pretty, and pretty-much-nameless, legal secretary in a Manhattan law firm. While Kim’s day job holds no passion for her, the handsome (and shaving-challenged) associate down the hall is another story.
Yet another story is that Hannah Marshak, one of her most-hated high school classmates, has now popped onto the chick lit scene with a hot new book that’s turning heads—and pages—across the land. It’s also popped into Kim’s inbox - for review. With their ten-year high school reunion drawing near, Kim’s coming close to combustion over the hype about Hannah’s book. And as everyone around her seems to be moving on and up, she begins to question whether being a “blogger girl” makes the grade in her off-line life.
There's no book genre I love more than chick lit and I'm not afraid to say it. I love books that make me smile, make me laugh, make me swoon, and generally make me feel better. There's already enough misery in the world, so I love nothing more than picking up a book that will make me forget about everything for a while and just focus on something else. I've got a review of a great chick lit novel to share today, namely Meredith Schorr's 2013 release 'Blogger Girl.' I was contacted by Meredith herself several weeks ago and was really excited to check out her book, specifically because of the title and description which both, unsurprisingly, really spoke to me!
Twenty-something Kimberley Long works as a legal secretary in a Manhattan law firm, a job she enjoys, but her real passion is books, chick lit in particular. Her book blog 'Pastel is the New Black' has a lot of followers and Kim spends as much time as she can into reading and reviewing. As a blogger it's important to try and stay objective, but this becomes a bit tricky for Kim when she is asked to review a debut novel by new author Hannah Marshak, who also happens to be Kim's number 1 enemy from her high school years. With her full-time job, her blog, a ten-year school reunion coming up and a crush on a colleague, Kim definitely has enough to deal with...
Being a chick lit book blogger myself, I already had a good feeling I was going to enjoy 'Blogger Girl', but I was pleasantly surprised by the amazingness of this novel! It truly is a fantastic chick lit read; a book I didn't want to put down and thoroughly enjoyed reading. One of the absolute strengths of the book is that it really has everything I look for in a chick lit novel: a relatable and likeable heroine, wonderful secondary characters, a good setting, enough different story lines to focus on, a lovely dose of romance, and a well-paced and comfortable writing style. And the cherry on the cake is, of course, the fact that the novel has a personal touch for me since it focuses on a twenty-something who has a full-time job but whose true passion lies with her chick lit blog, which is basically a description of my own life!
Kim, the main character in this book, is a great leading lady; she's easy to relate to, funny, and just really likeable. There's a good collection of secondary characters as well, such as Kim's best friend Bridget, her hunky colleague Nicholas, and her high school enemy Hannah. I basically loved everything about this novel, except for its book cover. I think this book deserves a great chick lit cover that will straight away attract readers, because even though we say we don't, many readers still more easily pick up books with a cover they like and this book definitely deserves a gorgeous cover. Overall, 'Blogger Girl' is a simply amazing and captivating read which I enjoyed from start to finish and can't recommend enough to any chick lit fans out there. I am already a big fan of Meredith Schorr's work and can't wait to pick up the sequel to this book, 'Novelista Girl'!
Thank you so much for the great review, Jody! I'm so glad that you enjoyed Blogger Girl. I think I already gave you a copy of Novelista Girl but, if not, let me know and I will send it over if you want to read/review it as well.
