Review: 'The Love Shack' by Jane Costello (2015)

Life's great when you're 29 years old with a gorgeous girlfriend and fulfilling job. Until you have to move back in with your mum . . .

Dan and Gemma have found their dream first home, but the asking price is the stuff of nightmares. The only way they'll ever save enough for the deposit is by moving in, rent-free, with Dan's mum.

It's a desperate solution, but it's only for six months. And Gemma's determined to make it work, no matter how bad things get.

But between Dan's mum's kitchen karaoke, her constant innuendos, irrepressible argumentative streak and - worst of all - her ham and pineapple curries, life back at home would test the patience of two saints. Which Dan and Gemma most definitely are not.

Then, as they're trying to convince themselves it will all be worth it, Gemma's past comes back to haunt her. And suddenly the foundations of their entire relationship are shaken to their core…

As a big chick lit fan I am very ashamed to admit I've somehow never actually read one of Jane Costello's novels. I have a copy of almost all of her books lying around my home, but I never actually got to picking one of them up and reading it. So, when I was contacted about Jane's newest release 'The Love Shack', I knew there was no way I was going to miss out on another one of her books, especially not after having read so many positive things about her writing over the past couple of years. As soon as I found the gorgeous paperback copy of the novel on my doorstep, I decided to temporarily ignore my pile of review books, find a bit of extra time and dive in straight away!

Dan and Gemma have been together for several years and, both at the end of their twenties, have decided it is time to buy their first house together. After having looked around for quite some time without any luck, they one day visit Pebble Cottage and straight away know it's their dream home. The house, however, is quite a bit over their budget and will need some work. Gemma and Dan decide to go for it and in order to save the money they need, they give up their rented flat and move in with Dan's mother. Temporarily, until they've saved that bit of extra money. Yet, moving in with your mother/mother-in-law brings some troubles with it, especially when these come at the same time as the stress of buying a house and just the trials and tribulations of every-day life in general...

You know a novel is a great one if you don't want to put it down because you're enjoying reading it too much to go and do something else. I have to say I loved absolutely everything about 'The Love Shack'; from its gorgeous book cover to the captivating storyline and the simply wonderful group of characters. Jane Costello is a fabulous author and born storyteller and I couldn't get enough of her latest release. This is one of those books that makes you forget about real life for a few hours and smile and feel with the characters in it. The two main characters from whose point of view the story is told, Gemma and Dan, were both easy to like and warm to (they make a lovely couple), and I suspect many readers will be able to relate to them and the situations they find themselves in.

Next to Dan and Gemma, there are several wonderful secondary characters who really added their own touch to the story, such as Dan's mother Belinda and grandmother Flossie, estate agent Rich, and both Dan's and Gemma's colleagues at work. I can't believe this is my first Jane Costello read and I already can't wait to pick up more of her novels, which I'm sure I'll enjoy as well. 'The Love Shack' is a simply amazing, witty, warm, light-hearted read which I couldn't get enough of. A read that comes highly recommended to chick lit/rom com fans; I hope you will end up enjoying it as much as I did!
Rating:10/10

I always enjoy Jane's books; her stories are perfect to escape from reality for a few hours and always make me smile. Weekly Feature - Once Upon a Story...

'Once Upon a Story' is a weekly feature in which we go back in time and focus on a specific novel that was released in the same month we're in right now (in this case April), but a few years back! It can be a women's fiction classic from the 1990's or perhaps a great chick lit read from 2011. I thought it would be nice to not just focus on recent releases, but also take the chance to jump back in time once a week and look back at wonderful reads that have been released over the years!

This week, we're travelling back to April 2010 to look back at...

At 28, Lucy is doing well for herself. She's got a great job in PR, her boss loves her, and her best girlfriends Dominique and Erin think she's great. More important than anyone's opinion is that of her flatmate, and oldest friend in the world, Henry. For twenty years they've been inseparable: beauty and the geek. Henry thinks the world of Lucy. So why does she feel the need to lie outrageously on dates?

From rock-climbing to Chekov: when it comes to prospective boyfriends, Lucy is compelled to embellish her C.V. with unlikely porkies that always backfire - with hilarious results. Henry can't understand it. Lucy is so loveable: why can't she just be herself? But when Lucy turns the spotlight on Henry, he wishes he'd never brought it up. With a penchant for jumpers and NHS-style specs, Lucy decides that Henry is in need of a makeover - big time.

Enlisting the help of Dom and Erin, it's not long before the girls have Henry out of the flat, and into the Topman changing rooms. A new haircut, contact lenses, a flirting master-class from Dom . . . poor Henry doesn't know what's hit him. But nothing can prepare them for the surprise results! Before long, Lucy realises that their lives will never be the same again.

Fans of chick lit will be familiar with Jane Costello's name and most importantly, her amazing novels! 'My Single Friend' was the third of Jane's novels that was published and tells the story of best friends Lucy and Henry. It's a great romantic comedy and a must-read for any chick lit fans or people looking for a comfortable and entertaining read. Talking about it has made me want to search for my own copy and re-read it all over again!

Be sure to visit the blog next week for another blast from chick lit past with 'Once Upon a Story...'!

Top Ten Tuesday - Top Ten Books On My Spring 2014 TBR List

'Top Ten Tuesday' is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. Lately I've seen some other book bloggers being quite enthusiastic about this weekly meme, so I decided to join in with the fun and try it out myself as well!

Top Ten Books On My Spring 2014 To-Be-Read List

Today's Top Ten Tuesday gives me the chance to tell all of you about the 10 books that are on my Spring 2014 to-be-read list! I have to admit, my to-be-read list usually consists of tons of books and I only end up reading a few of them because there's just not enough time to read all of them! So, I decided to go with a top 10 of books I will definitely read before the start of the summer, either because they're already lying on my bookshelf, waiting to be picked up, or because I am 100% sure I'll buy a copy of the book as soon as it is released because I am so excited about it. Here we go!

1. 'If I Could Turn Back Time' - Nicola Doherty (April 2014)

The paperback version of Nicola Doherty's latest release 'If I Could Turn Back Time' will be released in April, and I was lucky enough to receive an early review copy from the publisher. The book has been lying on my bookshelf for quite some time now, because I was asked to review it around the release of the paperback version, and I really can't wait to finally read it this Spring!

2. 'A Special Delivery' - Clare Dowling (February 2014)

The lovely Clare Dowling herself provided me with a copy of her most recent release, 'A Special Delivery.' After my first experience with Clare Dowling's work earlier this year (click here to read my review of 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You'), I really look forward to reading more of her work which is why 'A Special Delivery' is at the top of my to-read-list for the upcoming months.

3. 'The Little Beach Street Bakery' - Jenny Colgan (March 2014)

Jenny Colgan is an amazing writer and her books never disappoint. 'The Little Beach Street Bakery' was released last week and tells the story of main character Polly who is forced to move to Cornwall where she opens her own bakery. The combination of all kinds of yummy treats and Jenny Colgan's writing is enough reason for me to straight away add this book to my to-read-list!

4. 'One Night in Italy' - Lucy Diamond (June 2014)

The next Lucy Diamond novel will be released at the start of June, which is still Spring, so it means I can add it to this top 10! I adore Lucy's work and I loved loved loved her previous novel 'Me and Mr. Jones' (click here to read my review). I have high hopes for 'One Night in Italy', but I am sure I won't be disappointed!

5. 'Carry You' - Beth Thomas (April 2014)

I just received a review copy of 'Carry You' yesterday, because I was asked to be a part of the blog tour for Beth Thomas' upcoming release. I straight away loved the pretty cover of the book, and the blurb promises a captivating story about a young woman named Daisy who has just lost her mother to cancer and is now trying to find a way to go on with her life. Another promising Spring read!

6. 'Thirteen Weddings' - Paige Toon (May 2014)

I've never met a chick lit fan who doesn't love Paige Toon's work, so it's no wonder the entire chick lit community is excited about Paige's upcoming release, 'Thirteen Weddings.' The book promises another charming and bittersweet story, has a gorgeous cover, and the fact that weddings play a key role have convinced me that this is a read I do not want to miss!

7. 'The Time of Our Lives' - Jane Costello (March 2014)

Another popular chick lit author is treating us to a new and exciting release this Spring, namely Jane Costello. Her novel 'The Time of Our Lives' will be released at the end of March and I can't wait to read another one of her feel-good and heart-warming novels!

8. 'You're the One That I Want' - Giovanna Fletcher (May 2014)

Giovanna Fletcher released her debut novel 'Billy and Me' last year and it was one of my favourite reads of 2013 (click here to read my review). At the end of May her second novel 'You're the One That I Want' will be released and I really look forward to reading it! The cover is absolutely stunning and the blurb promises a fabulous romantic story... A book I have high hopes for and I have a feeling I will probably love it as much as I loved 'Billy and Me'!

9. 'The One and Only' - Emily Giffin (May 2014)

One of my all-time favourite chick lit novels is Emily Giffin's classic 'Something Borrowed', so I can't help but get excited whenever a new Emily Giffin novel is released. 'The One and Only' tells the story of Shea Rigsby who has always lived in her beloved hometown in Texas, until an unexpected tragedy forces her to confront her fears and secrets. It definitely sounds intriguing and I look forward to picking up my own copy of the book this Spring!

10. 'The Best Thing That Never Happened To Me' - Laura Tait and Jimmy Rice (April 2014)

Lots of bloggers have been talking about this April release by Laura Tait and Jimmy Rice and it has made me quite curious! The cover is lovely and the blurb sounds like a great story I think I could easily fall in love with. I usually really enjoy novels written from both a male and a female perspective, so 'The Best Thing That Never Happened To Me' sounds like a great read to end this Top 10 with!

Which novels are you looking forward to this Spring? I'd love to hear from you!

Upcoming Release: 'The Time of Our Lives' by Jane Costello

Three best friends. One five-star hotel. Will it be the holiday of a lifetime...?

Imogen and her friends Meredith and Nicola have had their fill of budget holidays, cattle-class flights and 6 a.m. offensives for a space by the pool. So when Meredith wins a VIP holiday at Barcelona's hippest new hotel, they plan to sip champagne with the jet set, party with the glitterati and switch off in unapologetic luxury.

But when the worst crisis of her working life erupts back home, Imogen has to juggle her BlackBerry with a Manhattan, while soothing a hysterical boss and hunting down an AWOL assistant. Between a robbery, a run-in with hotel security staff and an encounter on a nudist beach that they'd all rather forget, the friends stumble from one disaster to the next. At least Imogen has a distraction in the form of the gorgeous guy who's always in the right place at the very worst time. Until, that is, his motives start to arouse a few suspicions...

Jane Costello's novels are always such a treat and I'm really looking forward to the release of her new book, 'The Time of Our Lives', on the 27th of March. I can't wait to read more about Imogen and this already fabulously-sounding trip, and I'm sure other chick lit fans are thinking the same!

She encounters an incredibly handsome man exactly like the one in her imagination--and her latest novel. Is Aidan Hathaway really one of her characters? And if so, what is he doing in Target? Jen knows the truth - but is she ready for the consequences?

As strange details about her husband’s past begin to emerge, memories of the man she married start slipping through her fingers like sand, as everything she ever knew and loved about him is thrown into question. The truth is, it was all a lie ...

April 2013 releases to look forward to!

April is coming our way, and so is Spring (hopefully!). Even though we can't quite count on the weather in northern Europe at the moment, you can always count on lovely writers to brighten up our days with some amazing new novels! Here are some of the releases which I am particularly excited about!

Melissa Hill - The Guest List

When funny, kind and gorgeous Shane proposes, Cara is over the moon, and can't wait to share the news of their engagement with all their friends and family. Excitement, however, quickly turns to apprehension when it seems that everyone has a fixed idea of the perfect wedding and offers to 'help' with the planning. With tussles over the ceremony and the size of the guest list, sibling rivalry and insistent in-laws-to-be, Cara can see the vision she has of her big day being ripped to shreds. So, she and Shane determine to make a stand and do things their way. But when they announce their plans for a beach wedding on a beautiful Caribbean island, there is uproar. Threats are made, family secrets are revealed, and things turn decidedly stormy. Will Cara and Shane manage to overcome all obstacles? Or will their dream wedding turn into a nightmare?

Why so excited? --> I absolutely loved Melissa Hill's novel 'Something from Tiffany's', so I can't wait to read this new story. And come on, that cover is just gorgeous, isn't it?!

Jane Costello - The Wish List

There are six months left of Emma Reiss's twenties...and she has some unfinished business. Emma and her friends are about to turn thirty, and for Emma it's a defining moment. Defined, that is, by her having achieved none of the things she'd imagined she would. Her career is all wrong, her love life is a desert and that penthouse apartment she pictured herself in simply never materialised. Moreover, she's never jumped out of a plane, hasn't met the man she's going to marry, has never slept under the stars, or snogged anyone famous - just some of the aspirations on a list she and her friends compiled fifteen years ago. As an endless round of birthday parties sees Emma hurtle towards her own thirtieth, she sets about addressing these issues. But, as she discovers with hilarious consequences, some of them are trickier to tick off than she'd thought…

Why so excited? --> I already made a separate post for Jane Costello's next novel, which revolves around a list of things to do before your thirtieth birthday... Definitely excited about this!

When you’re contemplating pain relief, birth positions and sleepless nights you really need a good friend – or four.

Why so excited? --> I haven't read anything by Amy Bratley, but I'm always excited when it comes to discovering new authors. A group of pregnant women going through the motions together? I loved 'What to expect when you're expecting'... So, count me in!

Paige Toon - The Longest Holiday

'Don't wait for the storm to pass; learn to dance in the rain…' Laura has been married to the man of her dreams for seven months. But a week before the wedding, Matthew made a terrible mistake. Escaping the humiliation that is now her marriage, Laura is whisked off to Florida's Key West by her best friend Marty. A carefree holiday full of cocktails and fun, surrounded by gorgeous, tanned men, is exactly what the doctor ordered. Distraction comes in the form of sexy Cuban scuba diver Leo. Laura's instant attraction to him knocks her flying, and she falls hard. As the end of the holiday approaches, Laura doesn't want to go home. Is it time to face the music? Or is there more to Key West than a holiday romance?

Why so excited? --> It's Paige Toon. Do I have to say more? I've adored all of her novels so far and I'm sure this one won't be any different!

Sophie Kinsella - Wedding Night

Lottie is tired of long-term boyfriends who don't want to commit to marriage. When her old boyfriend Ben reappears and reminds her of their pact to get married if they were both still single at thirty, she jumps at the chance. There will be no dates and no engagement-just a straight wedding march to the altar! Next comes the honeymoon on the Greek island where they first met. But not everyone is thrilled with Lottie and Ben's rushed marriage, and family and friends are determined to intervene. Will Lottie and Ben have a wedding night to remember . or one to forget?

Why so excited? --> I can't even begin to express how much I am looking forward to reading this. I love everything that has to do with weddings and I love Sophie Kinsella; the perfect combination!

Lauren Graham - Someday, Someday, Maybe

It’s January 1995, and Franny Banks has just six months left of the three-year deadline she set for herself when she came to New York, dreaming of Broadway and doing “important” work. But all she has to show for her efforts so far is a part in an ad for ugly Christmas sweaters, and a gig waiting tables at a comedy club. Her roommates―her best friend Jane, and Dan, an aspiring sci-fi writer―are supportive, yet Franny knows a two-person fan club doesn’t exactly count as success. Everyone tells her she needs a backup plan, and though she can almost picture moving back home and settling down with her perfectly nice ex-boyfriend, she’s not ready to give up on her goal of having a career like her idols Diane Keaton and Meryl Streep. Not just yet. But while she dreams of filling their shoes, in the meantime, she’d happily settle for a speaking part in almost anything—and finding a hair product combination that works. Everything is riding on the upcoming showcase for her acting class, where she’ll finally have a chance to perform for people who could actually hire her. And she can’t let herself be distracted by James Franklin, a notorious flirt and the most successful actor in her class, even though he’s suddenly started paying attention. Meanwhile, her bank account is rapidly dwindling, her father wants her to come home, and her agent doesn’t return her calls. But for some reason, she keeps believing that she just might get what she came for....

Why so excited? --> I had absolutely NO idea Lauren Graham (Hollywood actress, most well-known for her roles in 'Gilmore Girls' and 'Parenthood') was working on a novel! I'm a BIG Gilmore Girls fan, so it's no wonder I am looking forward to reading this!

April 2013 release: 'The Wish List' by Jane Costello

Emma and her friends are about to turn thirty, and for Emma it’s a defining moment. Defined, that is, by her having achieved none of the things she’d imagined she would.

Her career is all wrong, her love life is a mess and that rambling country house she pictured herself in simply never materialised.

Moreover, she’s never seen the Northern Lights, mastered the guitar, jumped out of a plane or snogged anyone famous – just some of the aspirations declared on a list the girls compiled fifteen years ago.

As an endless round of birthday parties sees Emma hurtle towards her own thirtieth, she sets about addressing these issues. But, as she discovers with hilarious consequences, some of them are trickier to achieve than she’d thought…

Good news for Jane Costello (and all chick lit) fans! On the 11th of April, Costello's sixth novel 'The Wish List' will hit the shelves. I personally love the sound of this story, which focuses all around an upcoming birthday and a list of goals the heroine, Emma, wants to have achieved by the day she turns 30. I'm a sucker for basically any novel that has something to do with lists (making lists just makes everything more organised, and who doesn't love the feeling of actually being able to scratch something off that list?), so I will definitely be checking out this novel!
