Upcoming Release: 'The A to Z of Everything' by Debbie Johnson

P is for Paris where it all began. J is for Jealousy where it all came undone. But the most important letter is F. F is for Forgiveness, the hardest of all.

Sisters Poppy and Rose used to be as close as two sisters could be, but it’s been over a decade since they last spoke. Until they both receive a call that tells them their mother has gone – without ever having the chance to see her daughters reunited.

Andrea, though, wasn’t the kind of woman to let a little thing like death stand in the way of her plans. Knowing her daughters better than they know themselves, she has left behind one very special last gift – the A-Z of Everything.

On the 20th of April we are going to be treated to something quite amazing; I can feel it. Over the past few years I've fallen in love with author Debbie Johnson and her novels. Her stories are the best; they always make me feel good, leave me with a smile on my face, and have me craving for more, so I don't even know where to start to explain how excited I am about this new novel of hers. 'The A to Z of Everything' sounds like a fantastic read already and I've only seen the book description and book cover (which is gorgeous, by the way)... Can't WAIT!

Review & Give-away: 'Christmas at the Comfort Food Cafe' by Debbie Johnson!

The Comfort Food Cafe is perched on a windswept clifftop at what feels like the edge of the world, serving up the most delicious cream teas; beautifully baked breads, and carefully crafted cupcakes. For tourists and locals alike, the ramshackle cafe overlooking the beach is a beacon of laughter, companionship, and security – a place like no other; a place that offers friendship as a daily special, and where a hearty welcome is always on the menu.

I am actually re-posting this review today. I already got the chance to read this absolutely lovely festive read by Debbie Johson some time ago, but I was contacted by the publisher with the possibility to give away one copy of the book to a lucky UK reader, and I couldn't say no to that fabulous offer! 'Christmas at the Comfort Food Cafe' is actually the sequel to Debbie’s previous novel ‘Summer at the Comfort Food Café’ (click here to read my review), which is also a brilliant read. Below you can find my review and if you like what you read be sure to enter the give-away...!

Becca is not a Christmas fan; she hates the lights, the sparkle, the general jolliness… Definitely not her favourite time of year. However, she’s decided to not spend the holiday season by herself this year but visit her sister Laura and her kids instead. Laura rebuilt her life after the unexpected death of her beloved husband David and the Comfort Food Café played a big role in that. Now it’s Becca’s turn to be charmed by the café, the locals and the beautiful surroundings. Will this be enough to defrost Becca’s heart after everything that has happened in the past or is even the magic of the Comfort Food Café not enough to fix things this time around…?

‘Christmas at the Comfort Food Café’ is the sequel to Debbie Johnson’s lovely novel ‘Summer at the Comfort Food Café’, which was released earlier this year. The novella is written from the point of view of Becca, the younger sister of Laura, who played the leading role in the first part of this series, and takes us back to the lovely setting of the Comfort Food Café near the beach. While I highly recommend reading the first book first (especially since it is just a fantastic read), this novella can definitely also be read as a stand-alone because enough background information is provided to understand what is going on and who the different characters are. I loved Becca; even though she is a bit of a Scrooge, I could understand her dislike for Christmas and just really warmed to her as a character.

I’m a big fan of Debbie Johnson’s writing and I have to say this novella was just as enjoyable as her other works. There are great characters, an entertaining storyline, a lot of emotions (one page made me laugh out loud while the other made me tear up a bit), and some definite romantic sparks. With roughly 190 pages it is also a rather quick read, and just the ideal novella to pick up when you’re looking for a bit of Christmas magic to get you in a festive mood but also for anyone looking for a great read, really. I can’t help but shout from the rooftops when it comes to my love for Debbie Johnson; please tell us there is more to come for the Comfort Food Café…!

I can’t believe how early I am actually posting this Christmas-themed book review, but let’s be honest… Is it ever too early for a lovely festive-themed read? I definitely won’t ever say no to a Debbie Johnson read, no matter the time of year or the topic it deals with; she has really become one of my favourite chick lit authors of the moment, so when I saw ‘Christmas at the Comfort Food Café’ available for review on NetGalley I couldn’t possibly click on it any quicker! The novella was released by HarperImpulse on September 23rd and is the sequel to Debbie’s previous novel ‘Summer at the Comfort Food Café’ (click here to read my review). So, if you are secretly already craving a bit of a Christmas treat, there’s no one stopping you from ordering this beauty right now…!

Upcoming Release: 'Christmas at the Comfort Food Cafe' by Debbie Johnson

Becca Fletcher hates Christmas so much, she’s considering getting ‘Bah Humbug!’ tattooed on her forehead. She has her reasons for being Little Miss Grinch; Reasons that make this the very worst time of year for her.

Now, though, she can’t avoid her version of ho-ho-hell – because she’s travelling to the Comfort Food Cafe to spend the festive season with her sister Laura, and her family. She’s expecting mulled wine, the smell of pine trees, 24-hour Christmas movie marathons and all kinds of very merry torture.

But little does Becca know that the Comfort Food Cafe is like no other place on earth. Perched on a snow-covered hill on a windswept bay, it’s a place full of friendship; a place where broken hearts can heal, and a place where new love can blossom. It’s a place where Becca’s Christmas miracle really could happen – if only she can let it…

One of my favourite chick lit authors of the moment is undoubtedly Debbie Johnson. Her writing is simply amazing and I love her novels from the first page until the very last. So, it's no wonder I was quite excited when I found out Debbie is treating us to a lovely Christmas novella! I know it's a bit early for Christmas for some of us, but to be honest, I am always up for a bit of Christmas cheer <3 And even better when combined with Debbie's writing! 'Christmas at the Comfort Food Cafe' takes us back to the Comfort Food Cafe and I can't wait to read a story from Becca's perspective...! One of my most antipcated September 2016 releases and I can't wait to check it out!

Review: 'Summer at the Comfort Food Cafe' by Debbie Johnson (2016)

The Comfort Food Cafe is perched on a windswept clifftop at what feels like the edge of the world, serving up the most delicious cream teas; beautifully baked breads, and carefully crafted cupcakes. For tourists and locals alike, the ramshackle cafe overlooking the beach is a beacon of laughter, companionship, and security – a place like no other; a place that offers friendship as a daily special, and where a hearty welcome is always on the menu.

For widowed mum-of-two Laura Walker, the decision to uproot her teenaged children and make the trek from Manchester to Dorset for the summer isn’t one she takes lightly, and it’s certainly not winning her any awards from her kids, Nate and Lizzie. Even her own parents think she’s gone mad.

But following the death of her beloved husband David two years earlier, Laura knows that it’s time to move on. To find a way to live without him, instead of just surviving. To find her new place in the world, and to fill the gap that he’s left in all their lives.

Her new job at the cafe, and the hilarious people she meets there, give Laura the chance she needs to make new friends; to learn to be herself again, and – just possibly – to learn to love again as well.

For her, the Comfort Food Cafe doesn’t just serve food – it serves a second chance to live her life to the full…

I love Debbie Johnson; over the last two years or so she has really become one of my favourite chick lit authors and whenever a new novel of hers is about to be released I can't wait to get my hands on a copy. Luckily, the lovely people over at HarperImpulse are always willing to send me review copies of Debbie's work (you can check out my review of Debbie's previous book 'The Birthday That Changed Everything', by clicking here), so I was lucky enough to also receive a copy of Debbie's latest novel, 'Summer at the Comfort Food Cafe', which was released on May 1st. The lovely colourful and summery cover already made me smile and the blurb only made that smile bigger... I had my fingers crossed for a great read, but was secretly already sure Debbie wouldn't disappoint!

After losing her husband, Laura Walker, now a single mum of two teenagers, never really managed to pick up the pieces of her life, and how could she, after something so horrible? But she knows she has to at least give it a shot for Nate and Lizzie, her kids, so when she stumbles upon an advert for a summer job at a cafe near the beach, Laura applies. When Cherie, the owner of the Comfort Food Cafe, picks Laura for the job, Laura and her kids pack their bags and make the journey to spend a few weeks away from it all. But the Comfort Food Cafe isn't just your average place, as Laura soon discovers, and it has quite a few things in store for her and her children...

I think I mentioned before in one of my other reviews that I feel Debbie Johnson is just getting better and better with each novel, and 'Summer at the Comfort Food Cafe' definitely proves this; what a simply stunning read! I honestly loved everything about this book: the gorgeous setting, the idea of the Comfort Food Cafe, the storyline, the writing style, and, of course, the great characters. I easily warmed to protagonist Laura and her story made me both smile and shed a few tears every now and again. As with Debbie's previous works, there is also a fantastic group of secondary characters that I couldn't help but fall in love with as well. Debbie has the skill of adding numerous extra characters to her stories, but making sure you can remember all of their names, background stories and specific roles in the book with ease, which is a skill not every author has.

The book starts with a job advertisement and Laura's application letter, which I thought was a really inviting beginning that made me curious to read on. The story has quite an emotional side to it as well, showing how important it is to be brave and try to go on with life after a set-back, and I can only applaud Debbie for writing another amazing, warm, heartfelt novel which will make you laugh at times but also make you feel all kinds of other emotions. I, once again, couldn't get enough of the storyline, the characters, the comfortable writing style... If you're a chick lit fan and haven't picked up a Debbie Johnson novel yet, go and get one RIGHT now, because you're definitely missing out on something!

Review: 'The Birthday That Changed Everything' by Debbie Johnson (2016)

She wanted a birthday surprise, just not the one she got…

The last thing Sally Summers expected from her husband on her special day was that he’d leave her for a Latvian lap dancer half her age. So with her world in tatters, Sally jets off to Turkey for some sun, sea and sanctuary.

The Blue Bay resort brings new friends and the perfect balm for Sally’s broken heart in gorgeous Dubliner James. He’s just the birthday present she needs. And when the chemistry between them continues to spark as the holiday ends, Sally wonders if this is more than just a summer fling.

But James has scars of his own and Sally isn’t quite ready to turn her back on her marriage. This birthday might have changed everything, but what will the next one bring?

I think Debbie Johnson's 'The Birthday That Changed Everything', which will be released on January 28th, is one of the January 2016 book releases I have been most excited about. While the gorgeous cover and great title are already enough reasons for me to want to pick up this novel, I have developed quite a love for author Debbie Johnson over the past year or so and have been eagerly waiting for her next release. Last year I read 'Pippa's Cornish Dream' (click here to read my review) and 'Never Kiss a Man in a Christmas Jumper' (click here to read my review), which were both great reads, and I'm so excited to finally have a full-length novel by Debbie to get stuck in. I have to admit I had quite high hopes when I started this novel, but luckily the book even managed to exceed my expectations!

Sally Summers is about to celebrate her 40th birthday and if there's one thing she didn't expect to receive as a present, it's an e-mail from her husband Simon saying he's leaving her for a much younger Latvian lap-dancer. Instead of trying to come to terms with what is happening, Sally decides to book a two-week holiday to simply get away from it all for a bit. Together with her kids, lovely Ollie and foul-mouthed teenager Lucy, Sally is determined to have a good time at the Blue Bay Resort in Turkey. Luckily, they are soon taken in by a group of families who have been coming to the resort for years. sally can't deny the sparks between her and handsome single dad James, but is she ready for a holiday fling or perhaps even more, or is it too soon...?

It seems like author Debbie Johnson has been treating us to very entertaining novella's over the past two years, waiting to completely blow us away with her first full-length novel, and that's exactly what she has done with 'The Birthday That Changed Everything.' This book truly is a fabulous chick lit read and one that I am adding to my list of personal favourites straight away. Main character Sally has been left by her husband for a much younger woman and she decides she needs a holiday with her kids to forget about it all. A basic chick lit storyline which Debbie Johnson has managed to make her own with a brilliant collection of characters, a lovely setting and an incredibly fun and comfortable writing style. The first page of the book already made me laugh out loud and that didn't stop as I continued reading. I personally really love Debbie's writing style and can't get enough of it; I was quite sad when I had come to the end of the novel, and I already can't wait to pick up her next book.

As mentioned before, the book has a fantastic group of memorable characters at its core. Sally is a warm protagonist that's easy to love, just like her lovely son Ollie. Her foul-mouthed daughter Lucy takes a bit of time to get used to, but I have to admit her rude words cracked me up more than once. The group of people Sally meets in the resort all had their own individual stories to tell and really brought something else to the table, which was great. There are a few time jumps in the book which really gave the story that much more, and the setting made me feel just that bit warmer during these cold January days. Overall, 'The Birthday That Changed Everything' is a simply stunning, fun, and memorable romantic comedy that left me wanting more; I've got nothing but love for this novel and its amazing author!

Review: 'Never Kiss a Man in a Christmas Jumper' by Debbie Johnson (2015)

For single mum Maggie, Christmas has always been a family occasion – her daughter Ellen filling the house with her bubbly warmth and mistletoe, her dad Paddy having one too many festive tipples, and the traditional family Christmas tree looking like a drunken elf vomited a rainbow all over it.

But this year, with both Ellen and Paddy away for the holidays, Maggie’s facing a truly blue Christmas – alone with nothing but a bottle of Baileys and an M&S turkey dinner.

Until walking the snowy streets of Oxford, Marco Cavelli quite literally crashes into her life – and, complete with broken leg, becomes her unexpected houseguest. All dreamy brown eyes and 6’5” of gorgeousness, the man is hotter and more delicious than a freshly baked mince pie.

Though Maggie always thought it’s a truth universally acknowledged that you never kiss a man in a Christmas jumper?

I have to admit both the title and reference to Mark Darcy (from 'Bridget Jones') and his Christmas jumper were already enough reason for me to want to pick up Debbie Johnson's latest release, 'Never Kiss a Man in a Christmas Jumper'. There's nothing like a good Christmas jumper for the holidays, if you ask me! However, I am also already familiar with Debbie Johnson's writing and would have picked up anything with her name on it, if we're being honest! Her previous title 'Pippa's Cornish Dream' (click here to read my review) was a read I ended up really enjoying, so I had my fingers crossed for this, hopefully, lovely read as well!

Thirty-something and single mum Maggie has always loved spending Christmas with her family. But this year both her father Paddy and daughter Ellen have other plans, leaving Maggie alone with just her Christmas tree for company. Until an unfortunate snowy bicycle accident leaves Maggie with an unexpected but handsome and charming houseguest in the form of Marco Cavelli. Since Marco lives in Chicago and is only in the UK for a short time, Maggie agrees to help him recover at her home after the accident. Marco should be out of there again before Christmas, but Maggie quickly realises there's a lot more to Marco than a pretty face and a Christmas jumper, and him staying with her might not be as awful as she initially expected...

'Never Kiss a Man in a Christmas Jumper' is a thoroughly enjoyable and simply lovely festive read; another great title by publisher Harper Impulse and author Debbie Johnson! The book is quite a short and quick read with nearly 200 pages, which makes it perfect to pick up in a quiet moment during this busy time of the year. I've had the pleasure of reading some of Debbie Johnson's other stories and it seems like she just keeps on getting better with every new release. This read has a great group of characters (with protagonist Maggie at the centre, a character who I felt was really easy to like, and some familiar faces if you've read Debbie's other festive novella 'Cold Feet at Christmas'!), a basic but entertaining storyline, a good dose of romance and sparks; everything I look for in an enjoyable romcom read.

I personally loved the setting of this book; winter time in Oxford sounds simply wonderful and the descriptions made me almost feel as if I was there myself. I am also a sucker for wedding-related topics, so I loved the fact that Maggie works as a seamstress and creates her own wedding dresses. The chemistry between Maggie and Marco was there from the first page, and I really enjoyed seeing their relationship and friendship develop as the story progressed. The only negative thing is that it wasn't a full-length novel, because I would have definitely loved to read more about all of the characters. 'Never Kiss a Man in a Christmas Jumper' is a sweet, warm, fast-paced, festive read that made me fall in love with Debbie Johnson even more. The book to pick up if you're looking for a quick and lovely Christmas fix!

Review: 'Pippa's Cornish Dream' by Debbie Johnson (2015)

Since Pippa Harte was forced to take over her parent’s farm, she’s barely had time to shave her legs let alone make time for love. Now she’s more likely to be getting down and dirty mucking out the pigs – and avoiding those of the human male variety.

When Ben Retallick walks out of her childhood and back into her present it seems that perhaps Pippa has more time than she thought. All Poldark smoulders and easy-going charm, Ben’s definitely worth whipping her wellies off for!

But Ben is a man with his own past and his own issues – and as much as she’s enjoying having him around, she’s got to get a grip. After all life isn’t always a beach … even if you are in Cornwall.

I think the cover of Debbie Johnson's latest release 'Pippa's Cornish Dream' is one of my favourite book covers of the past couple of months. The colours match so well, the font looks great, and it's just such a gorgeous cover; already reason enough for me to want to read the story that's hidden inside! However, I also already had enough other reasons to want to pick up this read; a publisher that often has thoroughly enjoyable reads (Harper Impulse), a lovely author (Debbie Johnson) and a fascinating book description. I got the chance to read and review Debbie Johnson's 'Cold Feet at Christmas' several months ago (click here to read my review) and I really enjoyed it. So, when Debbie contacted me about her newest book, I couldn't wait to pick it up and start reading!

When her parents died in a horrible car accident, Pippa Harte was suddenly left to her own devices and had to set aside her plans for going to Oxford University and instead stay at home to take care of her younger siblings and the family farm. These days, the farm is a holiday rental place run by Pippa while she also looks out for her younger siblings. One day, Ben Retallick, an aquintance from Pippa's past, hires one of the cottages and immediately there's a connection between him and Pippa; a connection that's difficult to ignore. However, Ben has a dark secret and he has come to Cornwall to hide away from the world. Pippa knows she needs to focus and can't use any distractions, but what happens when a distraction is as hard to ignore as handsome Ben...?

I’m happy to say the story inside ‘Pippa’s Cornish Dream’ is just as fabulous as its stunning cover; Debbie Johnson definitely has treated us to a wonderful romance story, perfect for a long and lazy summer day! The first chapter of the novel already paints a clear picture of main character Pippa’s life and I straight away warmed to her. Pippa is young and already has a lot of responsibility to shoulder; she takes care of her 4 younger brothers and sisters and the family holiday rental farm business. She’s independent and brave but at the same time she’s at an age where you try to find yourself and what it is you want in life. Mysterious, dark and handsome Ben Retallick comes into Pippa’s life at the right time, ready to shake things up a bit. I even developed a little crush on Ben; he’s the perfect hero for a romance story like this one and the chemistry between him and Pippa was definitely there.

I really liked the fact that while this is a relatively short and quick read (you can finish it within just one or two sittings), you really get to know the main characters. The storyline is an entertaining one and made even more fun with the help of secondary characters such as Pippa’s younger siblings Patrick, Daisy, Lily and Scotty. There was enough going on to keep my attention on the pages until the last sentence, and even then I found myself secretly wishing for more. This romance story was a true pleasure to read and one I’d like to recommend to any romance/chick lit fan. Overall, ‘Pippa’s Cornish Dream’ is a light, down-to-earth, feel-good read that will leave you with a smile on your face; I really enjoyed it!

Review: 'Cold Feet at Christmas' by Debbie Johnson (2014)

Running out on your wedding shouldn’t be this much fun!

A remote Scottish castle on a snowy Christmas Eve. A handsome husband-to-be. A dress to die for. It should have been the happiest day of Leah Harvey’s life – but the fairytale wedding turns sour when she finds her fiancé halfway up the bridesmaid’s skirt just hours before the ceremony!

Fleeing the scene in a blizzard, Leah ends up stranded at the nearest cottage, where she collapses into the arms of its inhabitant – a man so handsome she thinks she must have died and gone to heaven!

And when Rob Cavelli suddenly finds himself with an armful of soaking wet, freezing cold, and absolutely gorgeous bride on the run, he’s more than happy to welcome her into his snowbound cottage this Christmas…

Debbie Johnson's 'Cold Feet at Christmas', which was released in November 2014 by Harper Impulse, managed to immediately catch my attention with its lovely festive cover. The past year I've had the pleasure of reading and reviewing several Harper Impulse short stories and novels, and their works are always enjoyable, steamy romance reads. So, when I received the chance to review Debbie Johnson's festive novel, I grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

Leah Harvey is on the verge of marrying her long-term boyfriend; she's already wearing her wedding dress when she suddenly finds him getting a bit too close for comfort with one of her bridesmaids. Realising she is about to make the biggest mistake of her life, Leah doesn't think twice and runs away from her own wedding, straight into a raging blizzard. Her car doesn't bring her very far and breaks down, which is how she ends up in a seemingly deserted cottage in the Scottish middle of nowhere. The cottage belongs to handsome but distant businessman Rob Cavelli, who has his own personal reasons for not wanting to celebrate Christmas and prefers hiding in his faraway cottage instead. Leah and Rob can't ignore the chemistry between them, and suddenly their Christmas looks much more promising than expected...

I loved the starting point of this novel; a bride running away from her own wedding around Christmas time, ending up stranded in a blizzard, knocking on the door of a seemingly deserted cottage, where she finds the handsome brooding man of her dreams... I also warmed to both Leah and Rob. Leah is an incredibly feisty female protagonist who finds herself at quite a changing point in her life. Rob is the handsome, silent type who has been through a lot and has to open himself to new experiences. I could understand his motive for trying to push other people away and I wish more pages would have focused on his background story and history, because this really fascinated me. There are a few secondary characters in the book, but none that seem to play a really significant role. I would have loved to have read more about Rob's brother and mother, but I also understand the author's choice for really focussing mainly on the two main characters.

Unfortunately, the book was not as festive as I had hoped, based on its cover. The story is set around Christmas time, but that's also where most of the festive cheer stops, which was a shame. I have to say, overall, this book left me with slightly mixed feelings; I really liked the plotline and basic idea of the two main characters and the topics the book deals with. On the other hand, I missed the Christmas spirit and I wish more attention would have been paid to the background stories of the characters and the secondary characters. If you are looking for a quick paced, steamy, romantic read with just a touch of festive cheer, 'Cold Feet At Christmas' is your read. If Debbie Johnson decides to write a sequel, I'll definitely pick it up to see where these characters ended up!
